Benefits & Uses of Essential Oils

The Art of Aromatherapy dates back to the earliest civilizations when medicines, perfumes & cosmetics were derived only from natural plant sources.

The particles in essential oils come from distillation, by water or steam for extracting the different parts of plants, including the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels.  They are said to be the ‘life force’ or the hormones of the plant. Technically, essential oils are not oils, they are highly concentrated plant components. Some oils in particular, known as the Rare or Precious oils, require many pounds of raw plant materials to produce just a few ounces of essential oil. Because of the scarcity of these essential oils and the method of extraction needed to obtain them, the cost of these special oils can be extremely high and subject to significant price fluctuation. However, it is worth remembering that essential oils are extremely potent and it is important to use as little as needed, not as much as possible. Among the Rare & Precious oils are Chamomile Roman, Frankincense, Helicrysum, Jasmine, Melissa, Myrrh, Neroli and Rose. As they are among the most expensive of the oils, we offer these in 5ml size & some in a 5% or 10% dilution of jojoba oil to help make them more affordable.

Each essential oil contains a range of therapeutic properties. Their benefits come from their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These healing oils are rapidly growing in popularity because they help us to promote & maintain our physical & psychological state of health in peak condition. Adding some of the most common essential oils like lavender, frankincense, lemon, peppermint and tea tree oil to your natural medicine cabinet can:

  • Fight cold and flu symptoms
  • Relax your body and soothe sore muscles
  • Relieve skin conditions
  • Alleviate pain
  • Balance hormones
  • Improve digestion
  • Reduce cellulite and wrinkles

How to use Essential oils

  • Vaporisation - using an aromatherapy burner or diffuser, suffuse your surroundings with the aroma. Add a few drops of your chosen oil to water in the burner. Use it to create an atmosphere to stimulate, relax or uplift your senses. Tea Tree & Eucalyptus will act against bacteria during the cold & flu season. Citronella and Geranium will help to keep insects at bay.

  • Baths - add a few drops of essential oil to a bath. Relax in the bath for about 10 minutes, inhaling the aroma & allowing the oils to penetrate the skin. Beneficial for skin problems as well as relaxation.

  • Massage - just a few drops of essential oil diluted in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, grapeseed or jojoba massaged into the skin encourages the absorption of the oils into the skin & into the bloodstream where it can have the desired effect.

  • Inhalation – add 2 or 3 drops of essential oils to a small bowl of hot water. Close your eyes & inhale the vapours for a few minutes. This method works especially well to relieve blocked sinuses, headaches, migraine and nausea.

  • Topical application - by applying a cream or lotion containing essential oils to the body. In addition to the moisturizing benefits of the base cream or lotion, the essential oils will be absorbed into the skin.

  • Compress – wring out a soft cloth in cold water with essential oil added and place on the relevant area. To relieve a temperature, hangover or travel sickness, Bergamot, Lavender or Peppermint work well to relieve symptoms. A lavender compress used this way will give relief from sunburn.

Other Uses of Essential Oils

More & more commercial cleaning products on the market are utilizing the cleansing & anti bacterial properties of essential oils. However, you can easily make your own recipes at home, saving money & the environment.

Here are a few ideas using some of the most common of the essential oils:

  • Air freshener - Use 6-12 drops of Lemon essential oil in a spray bottle mixed with distilled water to use in the bathroom as an air freshener. Or you can vaporize Lemon essential oil to clean and disinfect the air in any room.

  • Residue remover - Use 1-2 drops of Lemon essential oil to remove gum, oil, grease spots or crayon.

  • Kitchen surface cleaner
     - Add 2-5 drops Lemon directly to a damp sponge. Use it to wipe countertops and cutting boards to help combat bacteria and germs.

  • Laundry freshener
     - Add 5-10 drops of Lemon, Lavender or Grapefruit to a small, slightly damp clean cloth; place it in the dryer while drying towels, sheets and clothes for a clean, fresh aroma.

  • Waste bin deodorizer
     - Add 1-3 drops of Lemon essential oil onto a cotton ball and place it on the bottom of the trash can to help eliminate odors and germs.

  • Fridge refresher - Combine 5-10 drops Lime, Grapefruit, Bergamot or Lemongrass to a small bowl of water. Wipe down the fridge or freezer with the water.

  • Carpet deodorizer -
Combine 12 drops Lavender with 2 tablespoons bicarbonate of soda. Mix well & sprinkle the mixture over carpets. Let sit for 15-20 minutes, then vacuum.

  • Scented fireplace -
Add 5 drops Pine, Frankincense or Sage to a medium-sized, dry log. Leave for at least 15 minutes and make sure the essential oil has soaked in before adding the log to a lit fire.

  • Remove cigarette odour -
Combine 4 drops Rosemary, 4 drops Tea Tree, 4 drops Eucalyptus and 8 drops Lemon with 1 oz water in a spray bottle. Spray liberally around the affected area. Shake well before each use.

  • Pest deterrent -
Add 2-4 drops Peppermint on a cotton ball and place in locations where you have had problems with ants or mice. The strong aroma will disrupt scent trails and discourage them from coming back.

  • General purpose & disinfecting cleaner -
Add 20 drops each Eucalyptus, Lemon and Pine, along with 30ml white vinegar to a small spray bottle. Add 30ml of water. Shake well before each use. Can be used on glass surfaces, windows, kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces and inside your refrigerator.
